The homepage looks almost aggressively simple, but that simplicity hides a serious amount of material. A couple of clicks gets you into language sections, writer indexes, periodicals, ebooks, and very long author lists.

We respect a site that spends its energy on documents instead of theater. The multilingual hub and plain links make it feel like the web version of an overstuffed reading room.

Whatever you think of the politics, the archival impulse is real. This is the internet doing preservation work in public, which makes it historically interesting before you even start reading.
